Call your Elected Official – Phone Call Script
The thought of talking on the phone makes a lot of people nervous, so we have written a handy script you can use to call your elected official to show your support for building a public system of affordable, accessible, quality child care.
Some things to know before you call:
● Yes, many $10 a Day child care agreements have been signed between the provincial and federal governments, but it will take years to fix the problem and we need to continue to encourage progress towards a public system of affordable, accessible, quality child care for all.
● No government, Federal, Provincial, Municipal or otherwise is mandated to provide child care to communities. The provision of child care in Canada has been 100% left up to the free market. So your elected official might say “it isn’t our responsibility to build/provide child care” and that’s exactly the problem!!! It’s no one’s responsibility!!! And no one is required to build or provide child care to Canadian families. (Yet. Child care advocates are working to fix that.)
● The very minimal management of child care currently falls to the provincial governments. Provincial can choose to fund current child care, build new child care, and subsidize worker pay, however the money for all the infrastructure comes from the federal government.
● Cities and/or Regional Districts are under no legal obligation to build or invest in child care, but it is the communities that directly benefit from increased workforce participation from parents, and improved pay and working conditions of early childhood educators.
” Hello my name is ______ and I would like to speak with (name of your elected official) about child care.
I am calling you today to let you know how important a public system of affordable, accessible quality system of child care is to me (and my family / my grandchildren / my loved ones / my employees / my coworkers / my community…etc)
The pandemic has shown us that child care is essential to communities and families. And now the 2021 election results have shown us that child care is important to voters.
Did you know that according to the OECD (Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development) Canada ranks dead last among peer nations for our child care system?
As one of your constituents I expect you to do all in your power to support building a public system of affordable, accessible, quality child care.
